US, Mexico, Canada announce travel measures related to Ebola at World Cup | World Cup 2026 news

World Cup hosts have agreed on measures to tackle the Ebola crisis after the WHO declared it a global health emergency.

The United States, ⁠Mexico and Canada have announced health travel plans for people from parts of Africa most at risk of Ebola as they seek to protect citizens and visitors during the World Cup, which starts next month.

“The health and safety of everyone in the region will remain a top priority as we welcome the world to North America,” he said in a joint statement Thursday that did not elaborate on the details of the deal.

The World Health Organization on May 17 announced that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a global health emergency and said there is a high risk that it could spread to neighboring countries.

This decision has led to the government increasing the number of travel related resources.

Washington last week banned non-citizens who have traveled to the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan in recent weeks from entering the US. On Friday, the ban was extended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to green card holders who have been in those countries in the past 21 days.

Canada has banned people from the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan from entering the country for 90 days. The ban began on Wednesday.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents and other foreign nationals who have been affected in recent weeks and do not have symptoms must self-isolate for 21 days starting Saturday, according to a statement from the Canadian Public Health Agency.

Mexico’s Health Secretary David Kershenovich on Monday explained the methods of screening for Ebola in airports, urging people to avoid traveling to the DRC and asking those coming from the country to self-isolate for 21 days.
