The United States has also launched other attacks Iran.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees US forces in the Middle East, said the seven-hour operation ended at 10pm EDT Tuesday (02:00 GMT Wednesday), with warplanes, drones and naval vessels striking “a number of military targets near the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian coastal areas”. The strikes coincided with Washington resuming its blockade of Iranian ports, as oil prices rose amid concerns about global power outages.

Iranian media reported explosions in several cities and islands in the country’s southern coast, including Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Hengam, Sirik and Bushehr, where anti-aircraft missiles were launched.
Reports from Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi described “another night of escalation”, saying that a bottled water station in Dehloran, in the western province of Ilam, was reportedly hit, while Iranian sources said projectiles hit a military base in Bampur, in the southeast of Sistan and Baluchestan. There was no immediate confirmation of any injuries.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it carried out overnight attacks on US military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan in response to recent US attacks.
The IRGC said it inflicted heavy damage on the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet, support facilities and oil tanks in Bahrain, and the main US military base in Mina Abdullah in Kuwait.
The group also claimed to have destroyed the habitats of US F-15, F-16 and F-35 fighter jets, as well as several MQ-9 drones.
Meanwhile, the Jordanian military said its air defense intercepted and shot down three Iranian missiles that entered the country’s airspace early on. Cargo ships dock near the Strait of Hormuz in Khor Fakkan, on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, on July 12, 2026 (AFP)Wednesday.
The latest exchange comes less than a month after Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding that extended the end of April and established a plan for negotiations to end the war that began on February 28 with the attack by Israel and the US on Iran. The two groups have accused each other of violating the agreement.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that attacks on Iran “will continue until I say enough”, adding that future attacks could include nuclear facilities and bridges.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump also said the US had warned Tehran to return to negotiations. “I save the power targets last, but in the end we hit the power targets,” he said.
Along with the military strikes, the US said it had resumed a blockade of ships going to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas, which began at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday.
Reporting from Washington, DC, Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna said the US had sent naval weapons to the region. “There are a lot of US warships in the area; CENTCOM says there are 21 US warships,” he said.
“They will try to block Iran’s passage through the Strait of Hormuz and turn back any ships that communicate with Iran…
The renewed tension follows Iran’s closure of the waterway after Oman announced a new route through the Strait of Hormuz. Before the closure, the IRGC warned commercial vessels to use transit routes approved by Tehran, which it says is part of a joint accord signed by both sides in June.
On Wednesday, the IRGC warned that it could close “all other export channels that benefit the US and its allies”, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency.
“The transmission of electricity to the regions is shared by all, or denied to all,” he said.
Before the war began in February, about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas exports passed through the Strait of Hormuz every day.
Oil prices rose early on Wednesday as markets faced the US shutdown. Brent crude rose to $86.19 a barrel by 00:29 GMT, up sharply from near $70 a barrel before the recent rally.
Separately, the US Treasury said it had frozen more than $130m by approving several cryptocurrency wallets linked to Iran’s central bank.
