The Spanish newspaper AS asked a surprising question in its latest report. “Now what?”, referring to the uncertain state Real Madrid are in after what he described as the club’s worst in two decades.
The newspaper confirmed that the management of the Royal Club, headed by Florentino Perez, is aware of the extent of the crisis and is preparing to take urgent decisions to rebuild the team again.
AS explained that the image Real Madrid appeared in against Barcelona in El Clasico was the exact epitome of their disastrous season; a team devoid of spirit and personality, plagued by glaring flaws in every aspect, which forced Alvaro Arbeloa’s men to watch Barcelona celebrate the Spanish title in front of them.
He added that the club now faces three crucial stages before the curtain falls on the season, but the biggest focus is on the future.
The first step, according to the newspaper, will be to hire a new coach, as all eyes are on Portugal’s Jose Mourinho, who knows exactly all the details of what has happened within the team this season.
Mourinho, who has a strong relationship with Perez, has received comprehensive reports on the players’ performances and is seen as the preferred choice to bring back discipline and fighting spirit to the dressing room.
AS have indicated that the Portuguese coach is seriously considering returning to Madrid for the “last dance”, understanding that the current squad will form the basis for next season.
As for the second move, discussions at Valdebebas revolve around the need to strengthen the defensive line with 3 or 4 new players in light of the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and David Alaba, in addition to doubts over the disappearance of Dani Carvajal and Carreras. The club is also looking at reducing reliance on young, unproven talent and focusing on players with proven experience.
The third move will stretch the midfield, as the decline in Federico Valverde and Aurelien Choumini has raised questions in management, although the expected changes in this line will not come with the same urgency as in defence.
On the other hand, the administration believes that the attacking line does not need much change, relying on the trio of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, in addition to the return of Nico Paz and Endrik to support the attack.
AS confirmed that Perez and his assistants still believe that there is quality in the squad and that many players whose level has dropped can regain their best if they are given the proper motivation by the new technical staff. Changes to the club’s sporting structure are also being discussed to ensure greater stability in the future.
The newspaper concluded its report by stressing that Real Madrid are at a real crossroads and that the coming weeks will be decisive in determining the specifics of its new project, whether to return Mourinho to the bench or launch a white revolution that will restore the club’s lost prestige.
