The semi-finals of the Rome tennis championships saw unprecedented drama after world number one Yannick Siner suffered a serious health crisis during his clash with Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in what initially looked like a cakewalk for the Italian before turning into a real fight for survival.

An overwhelming start…then a sudden collapse

The culprit came into the game with tremendous power and almost caught “Rosco” (6-0) in the first set with Medvedev, completely controlling the course of the game, but everything suddenly changed at the beginning of the second set.

Medvedev took a 3-0 lead, and this is where Mekhk’s physical problems began to show. The Italian limped every time he reached for the towel between his hands, a clear indication that he was suffering from leg pain.

The Russian immediately noticed his opponent’s condition and began to try to serve as quickly as possible to avoid giving Yannick time to rest or recover. He also began to deliberately prolong the points by returning all the balls as usual, which greatly increased Sinner’s exhaustion.

But quite unexpectedly, Siner continued the fight with rare courage, saving the break points against him and leveling the score at 3-3 in the second set.

Despite all his tremendous efforts, overcoming leg pain and extreme fatigue, he eventually lost the set (5-7).

Medvedev leveled the match while Sinner shivered on his seat, trying to drink water and rest, in a scene that reflected the extent of his suffering.

Controversial medical time

During the third set, the Italian continued to constantly complain about his physical condition, but after reaching a new service break, he was able to advance the score.

During one of the breaks, he requested a medical appointment to treat the spasms, which is prohibited by law, but he justified this with leg pain.

This greatly upset Medvedev, who was aware that his opponent was playing within the limits of the law, a tactic that many players resort to in such critical situations.

With Sinner leading 4-2 in the third set, rain stopped play abruptly and both players were forced off the court.

This forced break was clearly in Yannick Sinner’s favor as it gave him a golden opportunity to recuperate and try to settle the match upon his return.

As for the Russian, he was not at all satisfied with this suspension, and was ready to play in the pouring rain, but the wisdom of the chair and the Sinner prevented it, which greatly displeased him.
