A month after the Department of Defense (DOD) boasting that nearly half of its 3.5 million employees are using AI at work, members of the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) received an email informing them that they are burning with symptoms, and should reduce their use.
“Although the CIO Army announced in May 2026 that it was providing unlimited tokens, by mid-June the CIO Army had run out of tokens and had to re-establish a limit,” the email reads. The email goes on to say that even if the Army decides to resume using tokens “in due course,” it’s unclear “if the military CIO pool will be reorganized after Oct. 1.”
Army uses it Ask the SageA multimodal AI platform where users can use a large number of language models (LLMs), including Alphabet’s Gemini, Meta’s Llama, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. “It seems like the entire Army burned through a year’s worth of marks for just one mission,” said a soldier who spoke to WIRED on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
