United bet on ‘crazy’ Liverpool goal after Ederson deal collapses

The summer transfer market didn’t go as planned for Manchester United after one deal after another fell through and the goals that topped the priorities for midfield reinforcements evaporated. But the English club did not dwell on their failures for long and quickly began to chart a new course, opening the door to talks with a new Brazilian target after the collapse of the Ederson deal.

Manchester United have opened talks to sign Wolverhampton’s Brazil international Joao Gomez as part of their bid to strengthen their midfield ahead of the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

As the squad return to pre-season training, no new players have yet arrived at Old Trafford and the club have failed to sign a number of players who have been on their target list.

Elliott Anderson was a priority for Manchester United in the transfer window, but the club failed to land the Nottingham Forest and England international after Manchester City sealed the deal for £116m.

United were also linked with West Ham’s Portuguese player Mateus Fernandez, but he ended up moving to Tottenham for £85m. Sandro Tonali was also among the names linked with a move to Old Trafford, but he also joined Tottenham.

Ahead of the World Cup, Manchester United agreed a £38million deal with Atalanta to sign Ederson, who was a late call-up to the Brazil squad for the tournament, but the deal collapsed before the official announcement, apparently due to problems with the player’s medical.

That has forced United’s management to change their plans, turning their attention to a surprise target who is also on Liverpool’s interest list, Joao Gomez, the Wolverhampton man whose side were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, the website reports. Jalobo Brazilian.

Manchester United opened the door to talks with Gomes in the summer but appeared to have lost the chance to sign him after his agent Jorge Mendes held talks over a move for the player to Atletico Madrid.

However, his move to the Spanish club was not completed, so Manchester United are back in the race to sign the Wolverhampton player.

Gomez missed just three games for Wolverhampton in the 2025-26 Premier League season, and the team’s home game against Manchester United was one of those matches.

Atletico Madrid were close to completing a deal to sign Gomes for €45m (£38m), the same amount Manchester United were willing to pay for Ederson.

Manchester United have resumed talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign the 25-year-old, who the Official Wolverhampton Podcast described as “crazy”.

However, United’s task in completing the deal will not be easy as Liverpool have also held talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign the player.
