A sudden foray into the deal changes course in the last few metres
Chelsea have suffered an early blow at the hands of a Premier League club in the summer transfer window, failing to secure a promising deal after coming so close.
Brighton have announced the signing of promising winger Zadok Johanna, despite his Swedish club AIK accepting an offer from Chelsea.
The 18-year-old has been linked with several Premier League clubs, with Chelsea and Newcastle United both making bids worth €25 million, which have been accepted by the Swedish club.
However, Johanna opted to join Brighton, who announced his deal on Saturday evening after talks began last weekend.
The club’s official statement says: “Brighton & Hove Albion have agreed to sign Stockholm AIK winger Zadok Johanna on a five-year contract until June 2031” for an undisclosed fee.
He continued. “Sadok will complete his move to the club when the transfer window reopens subject to the usual statutory approvals.”

The announcement continues. “The young Nigerian player, who will celebrate his 19th birthday later this month, will join us after proving himself to be one of Europe’s most exciting talents following his impressive performances in the Swedish Premier League this season.”
Chelsea’s interest in Johanna was somewhat surprising given the club signed Alejandro Garnacho and Jimmy Gittens last summer, in addition to already having Pedro Neto and Estevao in their ranks, according to Football London.
Numerous changes to the squad meant the Blues failed to build the stability they needed as they finished the season in tenth place, outside the European qualification places.

Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez have also sparked controversy with their statements about their futures, which could see them leave before the 2026-27 season.
Aston Villa star Morgan Rodgers is one of the targets of Stamford Bridge officials and several other Premier League clubs this summer.
Although Chelsea missed out on signing Johanna, Valentin Barco is set to join the London club permanently at sister club (under Blue Coalition ownership) following his brilliance in Strasbourg, France.
