“The signals from El-Obeid are clear and understandable: Another human rights tragedy is unfolding in Sudan, this time in the capital of the North Kordofan state,” said Turk.

“Civilians have been under siege for 18 months, subjected to constant attacks by the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces in the areas around the city.

“This is not drilling but a red warning that should fall on the desks of the heads of states and governments around the world.

“Their phones should be hot in the coming days and weeks, with ideas on how to prevent brutal violence in El-Obeid and elsewhere in Kordofan.”

The United Nations Human Rights Council held a recent debate on human rights around El-Obeid, following a request by the United Kingdom on behalf of the international community.

The Sudanese war began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Kordofan – home to oil and the most powerful fighters of the RSF – is still a battlefield.

El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, is on an important route connecting the RSF-held areas of western Darfur to areas controlled by the army.

A city of half a million people that is home to around 100,000 refugees who have fled their homes due to the civil war, El-Obeid has in recent weeks been facing serious threats from the RSF.

After breaching the city for a long time in February last year, the army struggled to prevent the RSF from re-establishing a blockade due to drone attacks on the city and the main exit road.

Recent attacks have hit power plants and oil depots, blacking out and shutting down water pumps, leading to a severe shortage of clean water.

At least 45 people have been killed and another 41 injured in 15 drone attacks in El-Obeid and surrounding areas between June 6 and 28, according to the UN Human Rights office.

The European countries that wanted the talks to take place are preparing to submit a decision to the 47-nation human rights body.
