The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour version of Homer’s most powerful poem, the world premiered in London on Monday night, and critics who saw the film there and in the early stages in the US have been sharing the most anticipated films of the year.
“Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is a great tale of post-war despair and the loss of innocence suffered by the dead,” wrote the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, ahead of next Wednesday’s release and next Friday’s worldwide release.
IndieWire editor-in-chief Anne Thompson called the film a serious contender, adding that Matt Damon “he can beat the best player”. “My highest expectations have been met,” he added, calling the film “amazingly high”.
Several critics described the film as “flawless” and “impressive”, while others singled out Robert Pattinson’s Antinous for praise.
Erik Davis called the film “an absolute triumph and cinematic achievement from one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. It feels like everything Nolan has been doing with Imax has come to a head here.” The film was shot entirely using large-format Imax cameras, although it will also be shown in non-Imax cinemas.
“The design is amazing,” Davis continued, “the acting is amazing, and the scale is unlike anything he’s done before. What really surprised me was how he handled the horror. Some of the biggest moments in the film are lost, and I add a new dimension to his filmmaking where he doesn’t lose sight of the humanity at the core of the story.”
Davis added: “Anne Hathaway is amazing, Matt Damon is fantastic, and Tom Holland continues to prove that he can do anything. But Robert Pattinson stole the show for me. He’s so charming, so seductive and always so entertaining.
Meanwhile, Matt Neglia praised the episodes, calling the film “a great success, even according to Nolan’s standards”, while David Ehrlich of IndieWire described it as “naturally surprising” and “not desperate” compared to Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, which swept 2023 $ and took about $ 2023.

However, Ehrlich said that the film was “too difficult to be S-tier Nolan, but the finale pays off”.
Historian Tom Holland, meanwhile – no relation to one of the film’s stars – defended the film on X, saying: “I’ve seen it twice now, and in some ways it’s the best portrayal of Greek mythology I’ve ever seen. It honors Homer while creating something new.”
With a budget of $250m and extensive international travel to raise funds, the film will need to take $500m to break even. However, the signs are strong that the desire to go to the cinema is reviving, thanks to the strong performances of blockbusters such as Toy Story 5 and the unexpected hits of low budgets including Backrooms and Obsession.
