Ulster SFC final: Aidan Foraker ‘delighted it all came together’ on Ulster final

Armagh captain Aidan Foraker said his side “had a reason” as they ended an 18-year wait for an Ulster Championship title with a thrilling 2-28 to 0-25 victory over Monaghan after extra time.

Playing in their fourth consecutive Ulster final, having lost the previous three, Kieran McGeeney’s side led by seven at one point in the second half in Clones and were looking to win before Monaghan forced extra time.

Oisin O’Neill’s goal early in extra time proved crucial as Orchard County lifted. A 15th Ulster title And for the first time since 2008, Forker is keen to enjoy the show after their recent heartbreak at the competition.

“It’s something I’ve had in my head for a long time (lifting the Anglo-Calt Cup). Obviously the last few years have been tough, but it’s great for the group and the guys who have stuck with it,” he told BBC Sport NI.

“Very happy for the management team too, we’ve had some tough days in Ulster. The first six or seven years of my career at Armagh were defeats, four finals in a row, I think we had one set.”

Foraker believes Armagh used the experience of their previous final defeat to their advantage and the fitness work done in the lead up to the Clones decider helped them finish the course and take out Monaghan in extra time.

“We’ve been here before. We were with Tyrone in the first round (a one-point extra-time win in April) and we know the work we’ve done in terms of training and our footy in the end won it, we started well in extra-time and took our easy score,” he added.

“Glad it all came together. We were deserved winners in the end.”
