Ulster looked set to seal a top-eight place at the Aphidia Stadium after coming from behind in the second half to lead by a point with 12 minutes remaining.
The Warriors, however, were not to be denied a victory that saw them top the standings, as they won the game with a late try from Kyle Rowe.
It proved to be another disappointing trip to Belfast for Ulster after their dramatic 38-38 draw with the Stormers last time out, with Timoney disappointed they couldn’t get over the line in either game on home soil.
“Two home games to finish the season against teams one and two in the table, but you have to back yourself to win at home, so it’s disappointing we couldn’t do it,” he added.
“Like last week, maybe there were some great things offensively but then they had some great things offensively and we couldn’t stop it.
“If you’re neutral, it’s probably another cracker of a game. We want half of it, to be an exciting team to watch. It’s hard to put your finger on it, a lot of small moments, but they didn’t go our way.
“There’s no looking past next week, so while it’s disappointing, there’s an opportunity to salvage something.”
Timoney, who is likely to captain Ulster in the European finals with Ian Henderson suspended and Stuart McCloskey injured, believes the “real fight and spirit” Ulster have shown this season will stand them in good stead to respond against Montpellier.
The 30-year-old admitted their defense against Glasgow was “good” but “still needs to go up a level or two” in the final if they are to get over the line.
“If we concede as many points as we have, we are going to fight. We spent a lot of time on it this week and saw some areas of improvement, but to go again and when it becomes difficult for teams to score against us, we showed how dangerous we are.
“Sometimes the quality of rugby going into finals is secondary to the attitude you have, so I think there’s a big positive there for us.
“Last season or maybe last season we would have laid back and got beaten a bit more against Glasgow where we fought back and stayed in the fight against a really good team.”
