Ukraine has struck a gas facility in southwestern Russia’s Orenburg region, more than 1,500km (932 miles) from the Ukrainian border, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy said in his daily video on Tuesday evening that the attack was revenge Russian attack overnight in Ukraine. “Ukraine has said that we will do things in accordance with Russia,” he said.

Evgeny Solntsev, the governor of Orenburg – home to one of the world’s largest oilfields and an industrial complex considered to be a key military and economic asset for Russia – said nine Ukrainian drones had been returned to the region.
Fragments of the falling drones damaged a residential building, a nearby school and a kindergarten, without causing any injuries, he said.
Ukraine’s latest attack on Russia came hours after Moscow launched a series of attacks night attack on a neighbor, killing six people in the Dnipropetrovsk region, when the end of the three-day ban on fighting by the President of the United States Donald Trump ended.
The ceasefire took place during the celebration of Russia’s Victory Day, marking the defeat of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany in World War II. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv offered to extend the ceasefire, but Moscow refused.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was attacked by more than 200 drones, which destroyed electrical equipment, residential buildings, a kindergarten and a civilian train. He added that the drones were connected in six areas.
On Tuesday, Russia tested its new nuclear weapons, which President Vladimir Putin said would be deployed by the end of the year.
Putin described the weapon as the world’s most powerful nuclear weapon, saying it has a range of more than 35,000 kilometers (21,748 miles).
“It has the capability to penetrate all existing and future anti-missile systems,” he said in a televised statement.
Analysts have previously accused Putin of exaggerating Russia’s military capabilities.
Peace issues
On Saturday, Mr. Putin said that the war in Ukraine, which began four years ago, is over the end of it.
The Kremlin repeated its comments on Tuesday, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying progress had been made in talks with the US and Ukraine soon to end the conflict, warning that it was too early to comment.
“The basis gathered in the matter of peace allows us to say that the completion is approaching,” Peskov told reporters.
Zelenskyy, however, disagreed with the previous day and warned that Ukraine is planning another attack. “Russia has no intention of ending the war. And, unfortunately, we are preparing for new attacks,” he said.
Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said Putin’s comments were a sign of weakness.
“What his words show is that he has no power,” he said. “So, I think there is a chance to end this war.”
Negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict have so far failed, stalling in recent months. The US President, Donald Trump, has promised to end what has become a major anti-war campaign during the 2024 election.
On Tuesday, as he left the White House for China, Trump told reporters, “The end of the war in Ukraine, I think is getting very close.”
On Monday, Kyiv Independent newspaper report that Washington is trying to negotiate another temporary suspension that would include relief from Russia.
Ukrainian officials say they are concerned that the proposed deal does not include security guarantees, which Kyiv considers necessary to deter Moscow’s aggression.
