UEFA fined Aston Villa £19.4 million for breaching squad-cost rules


Aston Villa have been fined 22.5 million euros (£19.4 million) by UEFA for “significant breaches” of its squad-cost rules for 2025.

The Villans also face restrictions on registering new players in their squad list for next season’s Champions League.

A large part of the fine – €15m (£12.9m) – has been suspended, with the club relying on significantly reducing their squad-cost ratio in 2026.

In effect, this is a rollover of a suspended sentence handed down to the club last summer.

In July 2025, the villa was Fined €11m (£9.5m), A further €15m (£12.9m) over a three-year period is conditional.

Three other Premier League clubs have also been fined for breaching squad-cost rules.

Chelsea were fined €3m (£2.6m), with €1m (£861,000) suspended.

Nottingham Forest must pay €2.5m (£2.2m) and Newcastle United €3m (£2.6m).

The Magpies have also reached a settlement with UEFA’s football revenue threshold for overspending, meaning they will have to pay the club a further €10m (£8.6m) in fines. Of this, €7m (£6m) is deferred for future compliance.
