Typhoon kills 17 in central China as Typhoon Bavi approaches sea | Weather News

Heavy rain and strong winds are lashing southern Guangxi and central Hubei province, with President Xi urging a “comprehensive” response.

A typhoon and torrential rains in central China have killed at least 17 people, injured hundreds and forced thousands to flee their homes, with President Xi Jinping appealing for “everything” for rescue, state media said.

In southern Guangxi province, typhoon Maysak’s heavy rains and floods killed at least six people. Regional officials told a press conference that at least 130,000 people have been evacuated, but 11 are still missing.

State television footage showed rescue efforts, including workers in life jackets searching for missing people from blown-up boats and piles of rubble where houses were.

About 40 rivers and streams in Guangxi flooded, CCTV said, while Guangxi issued a red alert for flooding.

The storm and typhoon killed 11 people and injured more than 300 in the central province of Hubei, where one person is missing, according to the state news agency Xinhua. About 5,000 buildings were destroyed, and another 22 collapsed.

A rare typhoon ravaged Hubei’s Huanggang city, hitting a warehouse and a warehouse and lifting several vehicles up to 30 meters (98 feet), Xinhua said.

A man named Wang said the typhoon “sucked” his brother-in-law Zhang in his home. He was later found unconscious outside his house.

“Wall cabinets, sofas, coffee tables, dining tables and chairs disappeared immediately,” Wang told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald. It was as if the whole house had collapsed.

Xi said on Tuesday that rescuers should “go ahead” in emergency preparedness, CCTV reported.

Cyclone Bavi approaches

The deadly typhoon comes as China prepares for Super Typhoon Bavi, which he fell down over the United States islands on Monday before moving northwest.

The US National Weather Service said Bavi was packing sustained winds of 150mph (241km/h) on Tuesday afternoon and was expected to strengthen overnight.

Bavi is expected to land on the country’s east coast by Thursday, according to Xinhua, bringing strong winds and rain to eastern China.

The storm has left thousands of people without power in Guam and the Northern Marianas.

The island of Rota was reeling from severe storms, including winds of up to 180mph (290km/h) on Monday, which toppled trees and power lines and flooded the water.

The mayor of Rota, Aubry Hocog, told AFP reporters that he had been told that two people had suffered non-fatal injuries, but no one had died.

More than “50 percent of our island has been destroyed”, said Hocog, adding that it would take “two to three months” to restore electricity.
