Tyler Fletcher: Manchester United midfielder replaces Billy Gilmour in Scotland World Cup squad Football News

Manchester United midfielder Tyler Fletcher has been named in Scotland’s World Cup squad to replace the injured Billy Gilmour.

The 19-year-old has been training with Steve Clarke’s squad this week and made his international debut against Curacao when he came on at half-time to replace Gilmour, with no one around. 4-1 win for Dick Advocate at Hampden.

A scan after the game revealed Gilmour had damaged his knee and he will now return to his club Napoli for rehabilitation.

Fletcher, son of former Man Utd midfielder Darren, who has 80 caps for Scotland, received the call-up ahead of Udinese’s Lennon Miller, Rangers’ Connor Barron and Sparta Prague’s Andy Irving.

For the first time in 28 years, Scotland began their journey to the United States to participate in the World Cup.

Before leaving Glasgow Airport for Scotland’s Florida training camp on Sunday afternoon, Scotland boss Steve Clarke said: “Everyone is devastated for Billy.

“Anytime it happens during the campaign it’s heartbreaking but it’s especially hard to have it happen in an away game.

“For me, it was a really hard night, I didn’t sleep much, I have to be honest.

“I had to let three other players down again this morning, to tell them they missed out.

“I felt that Tyler came into the squad this week and did really well, played well so that was the thinking behind that.

“Obviously devastated for Billy and really disappointed for Lennon, Andy Irving and Connor Barron.”

Scotland’s first World Cup game is against Haiti in Boston on June 14.
