Toni Kroos didn’t need more than two words after the 2026 World Cup final to stir up controversy among football fans around the world.

After Spain’s victory over Argentina with an unanswered goal, the German star wrote on his “X” platform account, “Football won.”

Kroos’s comments came after a final that saw Spain’s clear superiority as La Roja imposed their style throughout while Argentina were content to defend in one of the most controlled one-sided finals in recent years.

Toni Kroos’s comment drew wide comments as many linked his statement to the performance of both teams in the final, after Spain had 65% of the ball to Argentina’s 35% and his players also scored 20 goals compared to Argentina’s just two attempts, including 12 shots on goal, while Argentina failed to get any direct shots on goal.

The stats also showed that Argentina finished the first 90 minutes with almost no dangerous chances, scoring a 0.00 expected goal (xG) that reflected the Spaniards’ complete superiority until Ferran Torres turned it into the winner in the 106th minute.

Before the match, Kroos had predicted Spain’s superiority, stating that scoring first would put the match within reach, which was indeed achieved after two extra periods of Spanish control.

Kroos has a special history against the Tango team after he was one of the stars of Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory over Argentina, giving his comments even more resonance among fans.
