To eliminate the repetitive clicking sound when you press multiple buttons, like going through a microwave menu, Starling has recreated the soft, basic click you get on your smartphone when typing. “I just wanted to see what a 4,000-Hz one-millisecond beep would sound like, and I was like, ‘Oh, that sounds pretty cool.’ It would make the microwave more satisfying to use,” says Corelitz.
Coogan says it can be difficult to communicate too much with too little, which made the challenge attractive to both. But a responses on Instagram it seems to indicate that there is more than just plain taste at stake here.
“One of the most interesting things people said over and over again was, ‘Oh my God, I’d pay $50 for a microwave that sounds good. It looks like there’s gold in it,'” says Coogan.
Richard Hughes, now Volvo’s head of digital user experience in North America, was a senior UX designer at Whirlpool for 15 years. He knows his stuff. They also know why established brands still sell bad microwaves.
“A lot of these companies don’t have in-house talent,” Hughes says. “They do the sound engineering of things, but very little sound.”
Hughes, at Whirlpool, actually tested the beeps in a very similar way to Starling, using piezos connected to an Arduino. And he says the company launched the KitchenAid Pro Line toaster where people loved its piezo sound.
“It was a very expensive toaster, but people just said ‘pilot button’,” says Hughes. “It was very soft, round, and people love it to this day.” No such attention was paid to microwave audio at Whirlpool, according to Hughes, because the company did not produce a high-end model where users could expect good beeps. Most microwave sounds are carried from one object to another.
“(Manufacturers) can redo the aesthetics, but the technical interior, that goes on, that’s why everything sounds the same, everything sounds bad, and it’s a piercing noise that we all hate.”
Fortunately, it seems we’re about to enter a world where our microwaves are completely sound-absorbing. “It’s going down,” Hughes says. “Companies have been focusing on product lines that have more margins, but you’re going to see that move in the microwave.” He said that after finishing at Whirlpool, he led the way in creating a number of products that should be entering the market right now. As part of this process, Hughes had Whirlpool see what a low-frequency field looks like on a piezo scale.
This, after all, is the true meaning of low-hanging fruit. Easy win. No additional hardware costs, just think about the details. “In the last few years, people have realized that ‘fun’ plays a big role in buying your product,” says Hughes. “The things that make it magical.”
