Two of Trump’s health care nominees crash and burn in Senate hearings



Two nominees for top positions in the Trump administration went under scrutiny from the Senate health committee on Wednesday — and both crashed and burned in their own ways.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) took a closer look at Erica Schwartz, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Sean Kaufman, to be the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Accountability.

Public health experts were “cautiously optimistic“Regarding Schwartz’s appointment. He is well-respected and has views in line with evidence-based medicine, including supporting vaccines—unlike the anti-vaccination Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who will serve under him. He is also well-qualified for this position, with a medical degree, a master’s degree in public health, and a law degree for a long time as the Chief Medical Officer of the United States. The Coast Guard is the deputy chief medical officer in the first Trump administration.
