Two men died after trying to save children on Seton Care Beach

Police said two people died trying to save two children in the sea.

Cleveland Police said they were called to Seaton Carew Beach in Hartlepool at 15:45 BST following reports of two children in distress in the water.

The force said the men went into the water to try and help the children. The RNLI pulled the men from the water and they were both pronounced dead a short time later.

The children were taken to hospital where they were confirmed safe, the force said.

Supt Glen Wand said: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of both men involved in this tragic incident today.”

The force stated that the dead people are not being treated as suspicious, and that a file will be prepared to conduct the investigation of the dead.
