Two French firefighters died in a fire near Bordeaux airport

Several flights scheduled to arrive at the airport were delayed.

Nunez announced the two deaths during a question-and-answer session in the French parliament on Tuesday.

The minister said he would travel to the Gironde “as soon as possible” to monitor the firefighting efforts.

The Gironde is one of several French departments ravaged by wildfires in recent days, following a series of unusually long heat waves.

France has recorded nearly 11,000 wildfires since the start of the year, and last week President Emmanuel Macron said there had not been that many fires in the country since World War II.

Tuesday’s satellite data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFIS) showed more than 42,000 hectares (103,784 acres) burned in France between January and mid-July, surpassing the record set in 2022.
