To mark what would have been Eric Morecambe’s 100th birthday, this episode of The Morecambe and Wise Show – a recording recently discovered in a private film collection – was first shown in September 1968 during the duo’s season on the BBC. As masters of a psychosexual drama, writer Dennis Potter and director Nicolas Roeg seem like perfect sleepers. This collaboration of 1988 did not reach the place but it is disturbing and enough for all the devotees. A mysterious young Englishman, Martin (Gary Oldman), shows up at the door of Linda’s (Theresa Russell) weary doctor wife, claiming to be the child he kidnapped after a teenage pregnancy. He is infantile, volatile and difficult, and he brings out Linda’s guilt that has been brought down in her loss. But is he just a figment of his tortured mind? Simon Wardell
