Does pink match green – or do they clash? This final installment of the Broadway musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz is an impressive feat of tonal juxtaposition. At its heart is the troubled relationship between Glinda the Good (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba AKA the Wicked Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo), but there are other strong threads woven in, including remnants of iconic characters such as the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and Dorothy herself. Demonic daddy’s girl Ellen (Gene Tierney) causes all kinds of chaos in this noir-melodrama, starring Martin Scorsese as an all-time favorite. Cornel Wilde is Richard, an unsuspecting writer who meets a handsome Bostonian on the train to Jacinto, but soon becomes saddened by his interest. Leon Shamroy’s epic Technicolor film won that year’s Academy Award and director John M Stahl is excited to bring to life the classics of Greek mythology, including Hippolyta, Medea and the sirens who lure men to watery graves. Once created as a vehicle for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross, The Bodyguard had a 20-year journey to the show before appearing as a Whitney Houston film. He plays a famous actor and singer who, despite being threatened by a stalker, defies the restrictions placed on him by his new security chief, Frank (Kevin Costner). Until, of course, the two reconcile. Although initially dismissed as hokey by critics, The Bodyguard now stands as a timeless tribute to the power of soaring ballads and intergenerational love. EEJ
