The film that won Denzel Washington his first Oscar brings important information about the history of the 54th Massachusetts regiment – one of the first Black Union militias in the Civil War. It is tragic that Edward Zwick’s play is told through the eyes, and letters home, of his white superior, Col Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick). But there is an important time dedicated to the enlisted men of the African American, Washington as a wise man’s journey and Morgan Freeman as his wise sergeant Rawlins, chosen in a bloody story of racism, heroism and freedom.
