Dead Wire (Gus Van Sant, 2025), 8am, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
The spirit of Al Pacino’s classic Dog Day Afternoon lives on in Gus Van Sant’s ripped-from-the-header drama. Both feature a desperate man who has gone to extremes, a police chase to find him and a 1970s media circus that creates an antihero. Bill Skarsgård is a gangster, powerful as Tony Kiritsis, a low-rise real estate developer in Indianapolis who believes that ML Hall (Al Pacino in an incomparable form) has cheated him out of a business. So he gets Hall’s son, Richard (Dacre Montgomery), caught using a word to match the gun. It’s strangely weird between the sweaty brawls, and Kiritsis’s persuasion that he’ll walk away from the case is almost hilarious. Simon Wardell
The Devil in the Dust (Ned Crowley, 2025), Winner +
This evening is immediately thrown off-kilter when a beautiful young lady kills a horse by touching him. The strong light in Ned Crowley’s thread does not really go away, as we follow Guy Pearce’s alcoholic doctor, Bender, rancher Sarah (DeWanda Wise) and her previously mentioned daughter (the late Emily Ford, directing Damien in The Omen) on a quest to exorcise the devil who will take him as a preacher. A cast of supporting characters – including a Native American named Shakespeare – keep the film from being overwhelming. SW
Bring Them Down (Chris Andrews, 2024), 11pm, BBC Two
A film with a timeless twist, Chris Andrews’ dark rural drama takes two neighboring Irish families, and then watches them destroy each other. Christopher Abbott’s shepherd Michael plots revenge when Jack (Barry Keoghan) – the son of his ex-girlfriend, Caroline (Nora-Jane Noone) – steals two of his sheep. We see their actions – and the unexpected consequences – in sequence from both men, with Keoghan unique in being able to appear both cruel and innocent at the same time. SW
