Trump’s nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia has raised long-standing questions about America.

However, the deal is already facing criticism from Israel and the US.

As news of the deal broke Wednesday, some Israeli politicians argued that Saudi Arabia could become a new nuclear threat in the region. Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, although it has not officially acknowledged it, and joined the US war with Iran over mutual concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program.

“The civilian nuclear program in Saudi Arabia will lead to a crazy arms race throughout the Middle East,” Israeli MP and former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on social media.

Democratic lawmakers in Congress have raised similar concerns.

California Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna told the BBC: “The deal is really a concession to the Saudis, and it’s just going to be more ambitious from Iran. It’s just not smart policy.”

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the deal would boost the US economy and strengthen national security. Wright also said in a statement posted on social media that the US-Saudi deal “respects the highest standards of nuclear security and non-proliferation.”

But the administration did not immediately provide further information on the matter on Wednesday, raising doubts about the deal. And perhaps in a sad sign, Trump did not preside over the signing ceremony to make the deal public.

Before holding a rally in Georgia, Trump attended a memorial service for four US service members killed in Iran and argued that his policies would make the Middle East more stable than ever.
