Trump ordered to pay E Jean Carroll $5.8m after unsuccessful appeal | Court Affairs

The order comes three years after a judge found that Trump sexually assaulted and defamed the author.

A federal judge has ruled that author E Jean Carroll can collect more than $5.8m that US President Donald Trump was ordered to pay after a judge found that he had insulted and defamed her, paving the way for the money to be released after the US Supreme Court refused to hear her appeal.

Judge Lewis A Kaplan ruled on Wednesday that Carroll can be paid the first $5m award awarded by the jury, along with accrued interest from the 2023 judgment. Carroll’s lawyers he had asked for the money to be released after the Supreme Court he refused on June 29 to hear Trump’s request.

“This is the end of the line,” Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan wrote in the court filing, adding, “It’s time for Carroll to pay.”

Less than an hour after the judge issued the order, Trump appealed.

“The American people stand with President Trump as they demand an end to Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-backed Carroll Hoaxes,” a spokeswoman for Trump’s attorneys said in a statement.

Carroll first accused Trump in 2019, writing in a statement that he sexually assaulted her in the dining room of the Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan in 1996. Trump denied the claims, saying he had never met Carroll, accusing him of lying to sell books and for political reasons, calling the allegations “false.”

Carroll sued him for defamation later that year, accusing him of damaging his reputation by claiming he had lied for personal gain. She filed a second lawsuit in 2022, accusing Trump of battery/sexual assault and defamation for another denial she posted on Truth Social in 2022, again calling the story false.

In 2023, a The jury found Trump guilty for harassing Carroll and defaming him through his 2022 posts. It did not prove that Trump was guilty of rape.

The second judge they gave him $83.3m in 2024 because of the bad words that Mr. Trump said in 2019 when he was president, after publicly announcing the case.

Trump continues to fight both rulings.

After the Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal, he called the case a “Fake Trial” and vowed to continue fighting what he called a “Martial Lawsuit.”

On Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers filed a motion asking the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision not to hear the appeal. He added that Trump would face an “impossible problem” if the money is paid, because Carroll has said he wants to donate, which would make it difficult to get the money back if the ruling is overturned.

Trump would have appealed the $83.3m sentence, arguing that his 2019 comments were made while he was president and therefore protected by presidential immunity. The Department of Justice has also launched an investigation into Carroll’s allegations that he perjured himself in his testimony.
