Trump blames Iran for ‘stupid’ strike on cargo ship in Strait of Hormuz | Donald Trump News

The US-Iran ceasefire that was tested as the airstrike in Oman is prompting a stern warning from the US president.

United States President Donald Trump condemned what he called Iran’s “stupid violation” of the ceasefire agreement after a drone struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump did not identify the ship in his post on Truth Social on Friday. But the British military said the ship was hit by a projectile from Oman on Thursday.

“One of the Drones hit hard on top of a large and very expensive cargo ship. Damage was done, but the Ship was able to continue its journey,” wrote Trump.

“Obviously, this is a flagrant violation of our Antitrust Agreement,” he added.

Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but two US officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity on Thursday that Iran fired on the ship.

It comes at a critical time, when the US and Iran are negotiating a peace deal.

They are within 60 days memorandum of understanding recently signed between Washington and Tehran, both sides have agreed to lift naval barriers and open the Strait of Hormuz to free passage as negotiators work to find a long-term deal on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief.

The Ever Lovely chose a southern route along the coast of Oman instead of going through corridors designated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), hours before the attack was issued requiring all merchant ships to communicate directly with the Iranian Armed Forces.

Immediately the attack stopped International Maritime Organization (IMO) trying to escort hundreds of stranded submarines from the Gulf, where more than 11,000 sailors have been stranded for months.

Iran has previously been angered by what it said “assistantReckless and provocative” the words of the United States and the six Gulf countries that rejected his idea that they can charge ships crossing the sea.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, defended Tehran’s position on Friday, writing on X that “safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz cannot be guaranteed by systematic, uniform methods or decision-making that does not take into account Iran’s role as a coastal state.”

The IRGC rejected US claims that a direct line of communication had been established between Tehran and Washington over the crisis.

“This is a blatant lie and we strongly reject it,” IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi said in a statement quoted by Iran’s IRNA news agency. “The Strait of Hormuz is part of Iran and has no ties with the United States,” he added.

Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna, speaking from Washington on Friday, said Trump’s tweets came hours after the attack, rather than immediately, as many of his responses to the current events show.

“Also, from Trump’s point of view, it’s a very limited message,” Hanna said on Truth Social. “Usually, there’s a lot of anger. But at the same time it’s a very strong warning from the president about the danger of violating the ceasefire.”
