Norway’s Viktor Hovland was roared by World Cup fans as he beat world number one Scotty Scheffler to win a playoff to claim the Travelers Championship title.
Norway’s ‘Viking Sari’ took to the course this weekend with a Norwegian team Trip from Boston To cheer on Hovland at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.
Hovland held a one-shot lead heading into the fourth round and came close to victory on the 18th, but narrowly missed his birdie attempt from 25 feet as he carded a one-under 69.
That means a playoff on Monday and the 28-year-old Hovland needs just one extra hole to take the title.
Scheffler widened his effort after Hovland made a birdie with Norwegian banking pounds 2.72 million ($3.6m).
He said: “It’s been stressful, but it’s incredible.
“I knew I had to be at my best to have a chance to beat Scotty, and I couldn’t be happier. I know how good I can be and I keep pushing myself and wanting to get better.
“It really bothers me when I come up short but I did a really good job. I didn’t start well on Thursday and I didn’t let it bother me. I couldn’t be happier.”
Norway next game World Cup on Tuesday Against Ivory Coast in Dallas, Scheffler’s hometown.
Scheffler said: “I’ve been playing golf with Victor for a long time. We’ve had some good matches in college and here as professionals. He’s got a lot of talent.
“He hits the ball so hard. I remember playing with him a few years ago at Bay Hill and I was just telling him, ‘Dude, you hit the ball so hard every time.’
“It’s really pretty impressive. He’s a guy with a lot of talent and he works really hard. So guys like that you like to see success.”
