Norway’s ‘Viking Surrey’ made an appearance on the golf course this weekend as Viktor Hovland played his way into Monday’s playoff with Scotty Scheffler at the Travelers Championship.
Norway’s soccer fans at the World Cup paid tribute to their Viking ancestors this summer, performing at games and Around the United States.
Their country played France near Boston on Friday, a two-hour drive from TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, and traveled to cheer on a Norwegian team in Hovland.
Hovland held a one-shot lead heading into the fourth round and came close to victory on the 18th, but narrowly missed his birdie attempt from 25 feet as he carded a one-under 69.
Scheffler then had to save par from inside nine feet and fist-pump when the putt dropped for a 68 that meant the world number one and Hovland finished on 21 under.
Organizers felt that an earlier 90-minute delay due to a storm meant there was not enough daylight for the playoffs.
So Hovland, world number 30, and Scheffler will return for a sudden-death playoff at 09:00 local time (14:00 BST) on Monday.
“It’s too close to finish at 18, but I’ll take the playoffs,” Hovland said.
“I’ve played a lot of great golf this week, so I’m feeling pretty good. Obviously, I would have liked to have it in regulation, but there’s a chance to win again.”
Haveland fell behind after a fourth bogey at the start of the back nine but bridged the suspension with three straight birdies at the 13th to tie with Scheffler.
“For a while there, I wasn’t even second, so really happy I still have a shot,” said the 28-year-old.
Colin Morikawa was nine strokes off the lead earlier in the day but shot a 9-under 61 to set the clubhouse target at 20 under, with Hovland and Scheffler having six holes to play.
Morikawa finished third, with England’s Matt Fitzpatrick further behind after a 64 – the same score as his brother Alex, who finished seventh at 17 under.
