Tadez Pogacar and Marlene Reusser secured the Tour de Suisse title as each won the final stages of their respective races on Sunday.
World champion Pogacar was competing in the men’s race for the first time and led Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz by more than four minutes in the fifth and final stage.
The Slovenian battled Leni Martinez at the end of the 151km climb and caught the French climber 800 meters from the line to claim his third stage win of the week.
“We tried but in the end he was too strong,” Martinez said. “Tadez has won a lot of races and he wants to keep winning, so it’s tough. I knew he wasn’t going to let me win.”
Pogacker, 27, has won six of the seven most historic week-long stage races, taking his Tour de Romandie bow this year.
He has 13 wins in just 16 race days this year, added Milan-San Remo to his Palmares in March and will aim for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France win next month.
Swiss rider Reusser won the women’s race for the second time in a row – and third time in four years – claiming her second stage victory.
The 34-year-old won Saturday’s individual time trial to take the overall lead and was 10 seconds ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini heading into the 100km mountain stage on day five.
The Italians tested Reusser in the early stages but he pulled clear in the final 800m before beating Kasia Neuiadoma-Fini and Cedrin Kerbaul to secure victory, while Longo Borghini crossed the line nearly 10 minutes later to finish ninth overall.
