This fan looks like a little bear when closed, and the soft plastic blades stop instantly if they hit something. (I’ve accidentally hit myself in the face a few times with this fan—no, I’m not going to answer any questions at this point—and it sounds weird, but I can confirm it doesn’t hurt.) As a bonus, it can also double as a flashlight with its built-in light, or a power bank for your phone.
This one also has soft plastic blades, but it doesn’t double as a power bank or flashlight. It comes in six vibrant colors (mostly pastels) and has cute ears on top when closed.
WIRED reviewer Kristin Canning’s favorite thing about this fan is that it’s foldable, so you can place it on a table to cool your hands. What I really like about this fan, after trying similar models from other brands, is that it doesn’t have the jet-engine whine that most modern fans seem to produce. Not that this fan is quiet, to be clear, but I’m going to be “non-disturbing.”
This periscope-shaped strawless fan is easy to carry and handle – there’s a small strap that goes underneath, and it comes with a stylish carrying case. It doesn’t double as a flashlight or phone recorder, but it does come with a digital display to show the remaining battery life. The wind speed is impressive—807 meters per minute—but this makes the fan louder than the smaller models above.
It’s a regular fan, a misting fan, and a cryo cooling plate in one! This new kit from Shark is only $20 off if you want one of the larger models, but for now rose gold is at a very low price of only $100. It’s difficult to handle, and each fan must be used separately, but I use the fan cooler most of the time – it does a better job of cooling than a standard fan.
