Tonda Eckert: Does Spygate scandal deserve Southampton manager’s second chance?

For those associated with the club, their desire to see a successful team next season needs to be removed from the damage caused by Eckert’s actions.

One of the most startling conclusions of the EFL investigation into Southampton’s operation was that the young pundit who was spied on outside Middlesbrough’s training ground had been pressured into doing so by other senior staff, including Eckert, despite his concerns about the role.

In many workplaces, a senior co-worker who pushes a junior co-worker to do something that violates industry norms faces swift and severe punishment.

But Solak told BBC Sport that the trainee was at fault for not making more noise: “I believe our junior trainee personally felt it was a mistake, and he didn’t feel good about doing it, and I think he should have expressed it more strongly.

Solak then revealed that he had offered the trainee analyst a full-time job with the club.

But the treatment of the young and inexperienced staff has left the culture of the club in question.

Tesma added, “The club is lacking in managing the problem and identifying its own problems.”

“I hope they all learned a very hard lesson, when you’re in trouble, you need to take responsibility for it.”

If Southampton can keep Eckert in his job, the question will continue to be asked as to whether the club have really learned that lesson.
