Senegal coach Pape Tiau has settled the controversy surrounding his contract with the Senegalese Football Association, confirming a final agreement has been reached ahead of a crucial 2026 World Cup group stage second-round clash with Norway.
“The agreement was reached, it took a long time, but I must say clearly that it was never a question of money, but a question of principle and respect,” 45-year-old Thiau said during a press conference on Sunday evening.
The Senegalese coach, who has been in charge of the team since his appointment without signing an official contract, added: “It is true that some problems have arisen, but whether it concerns the players, the technical staff, the federation or even myself, we are all focused on tomorrow’s match, which is the most important.”
Tensions within the camp
Thiau’s comments came in light of the tense atmosphere at the Teranga Lions camp, where there was sharp criticism of accommodation conditions and poor food provided to the players, causing apparent displeasure among the Senegalese delegation.
The issue of Thiau’s contract has emerged as one of the most pressing issues for the Senegalese federation, especially with the looming decider against Norway, which starts at dawn on Tuesday.
A decisive meeting
Senegal will be looking for their first win of the tournament after the first round result in a clash that could decide their fate for qualifying for the round of 32 of the World Cup.
All eyes remain on Tiau’s ability to overcome the administrative crises and focus on the technical aspect, given the increasing pressure on the Senegal national team’s technical and administrative staff.
