Bastia fans spoiled the match before its end
Today, Saturday, France’s second division final saw drama and chaos, ending with Le Mans securing their return to the first division after a 16-year absence in a game that did not end in the final minutes against Bastia.
Le Mans managed to take a 2-0 lead over hosts Bastia, a victory they needed to secure promotion, but the match was abandoned at second-half stoppage time after home fans threw smoke bombs inside the stadium, coinciding with their side’s relegation from the third division being confirmed.
The Disciplinary Committee of the French Football League (LFP) is expected to decide to award Le Mans a 3-0 de jure victory, the same measure taken against Bastia earlier this season after its fans threw fireballs at Red Star’s Bradley Danger.

Le Mans’ return to the spotlight comes as the rapid success of a massive investment project involving international names, most notably Thibaut Courtois, the Real Madrid goalkeeper, who is a shareholder in the project through his investment firm NxtPlay Capital.
Le Mans ambitions are not limited to Courtois, as the club includes a group of prominent shareholders and sporting partners such as tennis legend Novak Djokovic and Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen.
Le Mans said in an official statement last February that having a personality like Courtois brings a “high level of experience” both on and off the pitch.
