Three ways to avoid costly EES airport border checks

If your flight is delayed due to an EES queue, airlines are under no obligation to put you on another flight without extra charge.

Travel insurance is more likely to cover new flights, hotels or other losses caused by delays in EES queues, according to the Association of British Insurers.

Anne Robinson from Dunbarton and her 13-year-old son Jack He missed their flight home from Rome. In June, they were stuck in a 90-minute queue. Two days later they had to pay £250 for a replacement flight, which they could not claim back.

No travel insurance policy expressly covers EES delays because this is an expected or normal process, says Anna-Marie Duti, analyst at Defacto travel insurance expert.

“In practice it is your responsibility to allow extra time for such long queues or delays,” she said.

There is less chance of a claim due to a missed departure or delay or abandonment. However, immigration or border delays are often not listed as covered reasons, she said.
