The Beijing Auto Show is taking place in China, giving those of us behind the Trump curtain a glimpse into what is increasingly becoming the world’s largest luxury car market. Chinese EVs leave everyone else in the dust, we’re told, with infotainment that makes your smartphone look like a StarTac, a range of numbers that would make a turbodiesel Audi scream, and a toll that can be faster than filling up on gas, depending on the size of your tank.
As an American, I often have to take someone else’s word for it. If there’s one thing Democrats can agree on with Republicans, even now, it’s that they don’t want cars from Chinese automakers on US roads. Towards the end of his presidency, President Joe Biden paid 100% tax. on Chinese EVs. Under the administrations of Biden and then Trump, Congress passed the ban selling China’s connected car software in the US. President Trump has he also increased the prices of the trees in Chinamaking their traffic very limited here. And this week onlymore than 70 Democratic representatives called for maintaining the barriers to Chinese cars for national security and economic reasons.
This puts the elected officials out of step with popular opinion on the Internet (I’m using Ars comments and the Bluesky TV platform as my bellwethers). As I see it, there is a strong desire for sweet, cheap Chinese electric cars. Heads like Reuters comments that “(f)or the average price of a car in the US, you can buy 5 new Chinese EVs” only reinforces that sentiment.
