There was not one, but two asteroid encounters this weekend



As the United States of America celebrated its 250th birthday on terra firma with fireworks this week, two Asian nations made themselves far from Earth.

On Sunday, Japan’s aging spacecraft Hayabusa2, which completed its prototype return mission more than half a century ago, succeeded in its longest mission to fly by the peanut-shaped asteroid Torifune.

A few hours later, China’s space agency released images from the Tianwen-2 spacecraft, arriving at its target of 1 billion km. On this small asteroid, a Chinese spacecraft will try to take samples and return them to Earth at the end of next year.
