The Zuckerbergs Are Hiring a Lifeguard, But They’re Calling Him ‘A Marine’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are hiring what they call a “Beach Water Person” who lives in Kauai, Hawaii, where the couple owns a home. spreading togetheraccording to the new list of jobs on the Greenhouse related to West 10Zuckerberg’s family office.

This is an interesting choice of job title, because according to the job description, the primary duties of this “Waterman” are “Beach Lifeguard” and “Pool Lifeguard.” In other words, to be a lifesaver.

The service mentions additional services related to water activities, such as instructing “stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), canoeing, sailing, and other marine activities.” This, however, comes after the water protection activities described in the work.

The place could have been called “Pool/Beach Lifeguard,” or simply “Lifeguard.” To be clear, “Pool/Beach Lifeguard and Boat Deckhand” would also work. Alternatively, the Zuckerbergs could have chosen “Beach/Pool Attendant,” an approximate job title. similar and lifeguards which can be broadly defined to include other leisure-related activities, such as managing a boat or teaching people to stand up on a board.

Arguably, any of these choices would have given a better impression than “The Waterman,” itself it is not visible to adapt to a job role elsewhere in the English-speaking world.

WIRED did not immediately hear from representatives of Zuckerberg’s family. With no one to talk to, we decided to ask meta’s AI chatbot “What is a ‘beach man’?”

“A ‘beach person’ would mean someone who likes to be in/near the ocean,” said the chatbot. “The word for that is thalassophile—’one who loves seas and oceans.'” Good!
