The Welsh sisters are playing the Hyrox World Championship together

“I always tell everyone, all the kids at my school that my sister is my biggest inspiration.”

Hannah Watson looks up at her older sister Aimee and smiles.

The Cardiff siblings are preparing for the Hyrox World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, as they juggle their teaching careers and their athletic ambitions.

Aimee, 25, took Hyrox two years ago as a way to keep fit during the off-season of her soccer career.

Not everyone goes from trying to put away shots to burpee broad jumps like Ella Toon and Lauren Hemp.

Aimee was a goalkeeper for the Wales under-19 football team and also represented Wales at under-19 level in cricket.

But it was Hyrox that finally caught up with him, especially when he got his sister Hannah, 22, involved.

“Competing as sisters, there’s something inside of you that lights a flame,” Amy told BBC Sport Wales.

“My first Hyrox was solo in London.

“I thought I’d just come back and give it a good go, had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but got it done.

“The next time I said, ‘Hannah, there’s some duality, shall we look at it?’.

“Out of nowhere we were doing our first pro doubles together and we found ourselves on the podium.”

The pair sealed a place at the World Championships by finishing first in their age grade at the Manchester Hyrx in 2024.

The sisters would finish 37th in Chicago with a time of one hour, three minutes, 56 seconds.

“I think everyone has said at Hyrox now, of course they’d like to be the best and it’s going to take time,” Aimee said.

“But we’re ready to go through it and keep working and commit to it and see how far it can take us.

“Training is about the process and going through it and putting up the yards every single day.

“We now have the right coach under us who is making us achieve goals we thought we would never achieve.”

This year the sisters hope to go under the hour mark in the Swedish capital.

“Our goal for world champions is a bit ambitious,” said Hanna.

“I think if we don’t get it (under an hour) we’re just going to push for it and then hopefully do some big races next year.

“We hope to make the podium again and then qualify for the 2027 (Hirox World Championships).”
