The victim of the Sydney shark attack woke up from a coma

A woman who was bitten by a shark while swimming at a popular Sydney beach a week ago has briefly woken up from a coma, her family said.

Leah Stewart, 34, was attacked by a shark at Coogee Beach on Saturday June 13, suffering multiple bites to her arms and legs and extensive blood loss.

The one-year-old’s mother was taken to hospital in critical condition and underwent several surgeries, including an amputation of her arm.

On Tuesday, her brother said doctors reduced Stewart’s medication, causing her to briefly wake up from a coma. “I love you,” she said to her mother and partner, who were both at her bedside, and asked if her son was okay.

Joshua Stewart wrote in an online message to his sister’s fans: “This is much faster than anyone expected, and for us it feels like a miracle and something that many of us have hoped for and prayed for over the past week.”

She said she remains in intensive care and had five days of surgery last week and has more scheduled in the coming weeks.

“Leah has a long road ahead and is still in intensive care, but this is a very positive first step and gives us hope for Leah’s long-term recovery.”

Stewart, who works as a teacher, had gone for a swim at Coogee Beach on Saturday morning and was in the water near the shore. The attack happened.
