The US Supreme Court rejected Trump’s appeal in the case of E Jean Carroll Donald Trump News

The US Supreme Court has rejected President Trump’s bid to overturn the grand jury’s findings in the defamation case.

The United States Supreme Court has refused to hear President Donald Trump’s request to drop the $5 million. judgment in favor of E Jean Carroll in a case where the jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a former magazine columnist and then defaming him.

The justices rejected Trump’s appeal on Monday after a lower court upheld the 2023 verdict and rejected Trump’s claim that the trial was unfair because the judge illegally allowed jurors to hear evidence of his past actions.

Trump has been fighting Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine, since she published her story in 2019 in which she said Trump raped her in 1996 in a Manhattan store.

The lawsuit that led to the $5 million judgment involved Trump’s 2022 comments in which he called Carroll’s claims “false” and “an act of fraud” in a social media post.

“This woman is not my kind!” Trump added to the post.

Carroll sued Trump in federal court in Manhattan. A jury in 2023 decided that Mr. Trump had abused Carroll and defamed him, awarding him $5 million in damages.

Trump’s lawyers said the verdict was based on “highly dangerous” rulings, including one that allowed the testimony of two other women who criticized Trump years ago.

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan upheld the decision in 2024, saying the evidence established “repeated, inconsistent conduct” consistent with Carroll’s claims.

Trump’s lawyers told the Supreme Court that the trial judge “improperly allowed decades-old, inconclusive and inconsistent evidence to be presented to the jury,” in violation of federal rules governing the admission of evidence at trial.

Carroll’s attorneys urged the jury to grant the case. They said the testimony of the other women is important because what they said is the same and what Judge Lewis Kaplan decided is in line with what other judges in this country decided.

The Supreme Court’s decision comes as it issues opinions on one of the biggest cases of the season, many of which are important to Trump’s political agenda.

The court also awarded Carroll another $83.3 million in damages after a second defamation lawsuit when Trump denied his first claim in 2019. Trump is appealing the decision, though it did not reach the Supreme Court.
