The United States Senate has passed a bill suspending President Donald Trump’s campaign against Iran and requiring Congressional approval before taking action.
On Tuesday, the committee voted 50 to 48 to pass the bill, which was approved in the House of Representatives earlier in the month.
Republicans have a majority in the Senate, but four conservatives crossed party lines to approve the resolution, along with all the Democrats in the chamber, save one.
The Republicans who split were Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky. The only Democrat who sided with the Republicans on the issue was John Fetterman of Pennsylvania.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said that Tuesday’s vote was the 10th time that the Senate has passed a military power resolution, to restart Trump’s war campaign.
“For years, Trump has promised to put more pressure on Iran, but he has delivered a lot of confusion, a lot of chaos, a lot of money to the American people with his dangerous war,” Schumer said.
“Time after time, the majority of Senate Republicans have sided with Trump and his war, instead of the American people.” The American people have paid the price for Trump’s historic missteps in Iran.
