The US military has said it will launch airstrikes against Iran after explosions occurred in several locations in the south of the country.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attacks began on Tuesday, and were being carried out “following an Iranian attack on three merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz”.

Iranian media reported several explosions in the southern port city of Sirik, as well as Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas.

Following the explosion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran said that the US government was responsible for the consequences of violating the memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreed between the two countries in June, which was supposed to end the war that the US and Israel started against Iran at the end of February. The MoU mandated Removal of US military restrictions on Iran to allow Tehran to reopen the all-important Strait of Hormuz.

The US also agreed at the end of June that remove penalties on Iranian oil for 60 days.

However, the US Treasury Department on Tuesday moved back a temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil sales after a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was attacked. A Qatari cruise ship has caught fire off the coast of Oman on Monday after being struck by “Unidentified Projectile” in Hormuz Riveraccording to United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

Iranian television reported that the LNG tanker was attacked after it ignored warnings, but Tehran did not say it had been hit. Neither the US Central Command (CENTCOM) nor the IRGC have commented on the matter.

A second ship, carrying Saudi crude oil, was also damaged in the Strait of Hormuz when the IRGC fired missiles, sources told Reuters.

A US official warned that Iran’s attack on ships in the Strait of Hormuz was “absolutely unacceptable” and the consequences will be met, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran said that it will do whatever it needs to protect the country’s interests and national security.
