The US and Iran have stepped up threats in the past week, prompting warnings of a return to full-scale war across the region.

The United States military says two people have been killed and four have been taken to hospital following an Iranian drone strike in Jordan.

In a statement shared on Saturday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees the US military operations in the Middle East, said one employee was missing following Friday’s strike on Iran.

“On July 17, two members of the US in Jordan were killed while acting as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the military forces that defended against the Iranian armed forces.

“Four American workers have been transferred to Jordanian hospitals and have been discharged, while others who were assessed for minor injuries have returned to work.

“Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold other information, including the fallen soldiers, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified.”

The statement appears to be the first US confirmation of casualties from further US military strikes in Iran, following. damage of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that temporarily halted hostilities between the US and Israel, and Iran.

Observers have seen escalating clashes between Iranian and US forces and growing alarm, warning that people across the region will struggle to return to war.
