AFRICOM says search and rescue operations are underway in southwest Morocco during the African Lion exercise.
Updated on May 3, 2026
The United States military says two members of an international military operation in Morocco have gone missing.
In a statement on Sunday, the African Command (AFRICOM) said the two went missing on Saturday near the Cap Draa training camp near the city of Tan Tan in the southwest of the country.
“The incident is still under investigation and the search is on,” it added in a statement.
AFRICOM said the US, Morocco and other countries participating in the annual African Lion operation have launched search and rescue operations that include ground, air and sea resources.
African Lion is the largest annual US military engagement on the continent.
It is managed by Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia, and its aim is to promote “interaction between the participants and equip them to deal with the problems and challenges that are happening in Africa and around the world”.
