Explosions have been heard in different parts of Iran, according to state media, while the military commanders in the United States refuse to take part in the new situation.
Several explosions were heard late Thursday in areas around Bushehr – home to one of Iran’s largest nuclear plants – and the nearby city of Choghadak, Mehr News Agency reported.
Three more explosions were heard south of Konarak city, it added.
Shortly thereafter, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) told Al Jazeera that the US military had not carried out any strikes in Iran in the past few hours.
The US and Iran have been there commercial attack Since Tuesday, Tehran has also hit military bases across the Gulf, including in Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, undermining a tough ceasefire agreement reached in mid-June.
Mehr did not provide details on what caused the explosion, damage or injuries. The agency also denied a recent report of a bomb blast in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
Bushehr’s deputy governor for politics and security, Ehsan Jahanian, told IRNA reporter that the explosion in the city was caused by air defense.
Jahanian added that a military base outside Bushehr was hit by what he described as a projectile.
The war is ‘not over’
After hearing the reports from Iran, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu said he had a phone call with US President Donald Trump “when they agreed to continue cooperation between countries in various forums,” according to a. words published by the office of the prime minister.
Trump updated Netanyahu on “America’s move to the Gulf,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, at the graduation ceremony of the air force at Hatzerim Air Base in southern Israel, Netanyahu said: “The war (with Iran) is not over. There are new challenges”.
The daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth said: “Maintaining clean air is very important to Israel’s national security doctrine.
Israel’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, also said that the war against Iran “is not over”.
“There are new plans for art. Big projects are expected. Be prepared,” he said briefly.
Israel’s defense ministry said Israel was ready to attack Iran if necessary.
“The military is ready and alert to re-engage, to re-engage with air strikes and re-engage with Iran, to end the threat, including a third time if necessary,” Israel Katz said at the airbase ceremony.
Conflict in the Strait of Hormuz
The latest tit-for-tat strike follows Iran attack on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week. The ships, including those from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, were hit as they passed through the narrow channel, following a route closer to the Omani side of the strait.
Iran has been insisting that all ships pass near the Iranian coast. Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) released a shared knowledge resisting attacks, both on ships and in the Gulf Nations.
At the heart of the conflict there are two different understandings of how to proceed: Trump wants the rapid resumption of traffic through the strait to reduce electricity prices ahead of the key mid-term elections, while Iran rejects any move that would reduce its control of traffic there.
The attack on the ships led to a sharp reaction from Trump, who called the Iranian leadership “scum”, adding that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was “finished”. However, neither side has gone away.
Trump added that he could allow peace talks to continue for now, leaving the path uncertain. Washington also canceled the export of Iranian oil – a means of securing the Iranian economy.
Although this is not the first time that they have exchanged fire, there are growing fears that both countries will escalate, making the region an even bigger war.
This comes as technical talks with negotiators have been suspended to allow for the burial of the Supreme Leader. Ali Khamenei who was killed on the first day of the US-Israeli war on February 28. It is not known if talks will resume on Monday, as planned before the latest attack.
