In all, there have been 10 cases: seven cases that got sick on the ship, one case that got off the ship on April 24, before the outbreak was detected, and got sick in Switzerland. The remaining two cases – one from France, the other from Spain – were identified as the ship being diverted and the passengers being returned. The number of deaths has not changed since May 2, with three in total: a Dutch couple and a German woman.

Also at the WHO press conference, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the work in the Canary Islands to safely evacuate the ship has been completed. The operation involved transferring the 120 passengers on the train to their home countries or quarantine them in their countries of residence so they can go to their destination.

“Due to the long period of up to six weeks, more cases may be reported in the coming days when passengers return to their countries, where they will be isolated and tested in special facilities or at home,” Tedros warned. “This does not mean that the epidemic is growing; it shows that control measures are working, laboratory tests are ongoing, and that people are being cared for with the support of their governments.”

The US is monitoring 41 people who may have been exposed. This includes 18 passengers (including Kornfeld) who were transferred to Hondiusthe passengers who disembarked the train on April 24, and the people who boarded the plane with the Dutch woman (the first lady) who also contracted the disease and died in South Africa, on the way back home.
