A GROWING STORYTHE STORY IS DEVELOPING,
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the deal after talks in Washington, DC.
The Secretary of State of the United States Marco Rubio announced the agreement between Lebanon and Israel after talks in Washington, DC.
The details of the deal are still unclear. But in a statement on Friday, Rubio indicated that the agreement is “the first step” in further negotiations.
“It’s the beginning of the beginning,” said Rubio, surrounded by delegates from Lebanon and Israel.
“There is a lot of work ahead.
The two groups gathered in Washington, DC, for four days of US talks this week, starting on Tuesday.
The ongoing war in Lebanon has threatened to derail efforts to end the war between Iran and the US.
On June 17, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the US-Israel war against Iran. The 14-point document called for “an immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities on all sides, including in Lebanon”.
But Israel has taken about a fifth of Lebanon, and continued to bomb the country after the accord was signed.
Last Friday, the two sides agreed to end the war, but the Israeli army is still in southern Lebanon, and although the violence has decreased, it has not stopped.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah has called on Israel to withdraw from the country as a prerequisite for peace. “Israel must withdraw unconditionally,” Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said.
The ongoing war in Lebanon has become a major source of tension between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, who are facing a domestic dispute over a war against Iran.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump confirmed that he had called Netanyahu “crazy”, even as he insisted the Israeli leader was a “very good man” with a “wonderful relationship”.
“We have a bit of a conflict over Lebanon,” Trump said at the Group of 7 (G7) meeting in France last week. “You don’t have to demolish a building every time someone from Hezbollah enters it.”
He then urged Netanyahu to take a “soft touch” in approaching Lebanon.
“They could do a better job with Hezbollah on this. I don’t think they’re doing a good job. And I feel very sorry for Lebanon,” Trump added.
At a press conference on Friday, Rubio repeated the message about Lebanon.
“The Lebanese people have suffered a lot now for decades because of interference from outsiders, and countries that are trying to use the country as a launching pad for protests,” he said. “This is not what the Lebanese people want, and it is not what they deserve.”
