The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) is set to evacuate more than 11,000 sailors stranded in the Gulf amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.
IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez said the “major operation” will be carried out in cooperation with Iran, Oman, the US, other coastal states in the region and the maritime industry.
“We have ensured the necessary security guarantees and have thoroughly verified the safe navigation conditions to support these operations,” he said.
An interim agreement was signed last week to end the conflict, but both the US and Iran continue to spar over the details of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The US said the memorandum included guarantees that Iran’s nuclear weapons program would be under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
US President Donald Trump said on social media on Tuesday: “Iran has fully and completely agreed to conduct high-level nuclear tests in the future (INFINITY!!!) that will ensure its “nuclear integrity.”
Shortly before Trump’s resignation, Iran said a U.N. watchdog could not inspect nuclear sites bombed by the U.S. and Israel last year.
“The Iranians have agreed to strengthen IAEA inspections of their nuclear weapons program,” a US official said in response.
Iranian President Massoud Pezheshkian said during a visit to Pakistan on Tuesday that Iran “will never negotiate with anyone on our defense capabilities under any circumstances.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a Gulf tour in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday and will also visit Kuwait and Bahrain – both of which host US military bases – to discuss the deal with Tehran.
Iran’s foreign minister warned on Tuesday that no country would be allowed to pay tolls on the Strait of Hormuz as Iran pushed to charge ships that pass through.
Arriving at the UAE, “It’s an international waterway. No country is allowed to charge fees or tolls on international waterways. That’s an international law.”
“I don’t think we have anything to convince in this regard. I think all the countries in this region agree with us.”
