Age verification is using the internet. From social media bans in Australia to porn bans half of the US statesfor many who have to prove their age to access websites they live daily needs. But one of the key technologies supporting many of this age group is about to enter the offline world – one that could revolutionize the lives of people in their AI-predicted age.
Starting next year, the British government plans to introduce facial age estimation – where AI looks at your face and makes an assessment. it shows how old you are—to help determine the age of asylum seekers arriving at the United Kingdom border. The move is believed to be the first time facial age estimation (FAE) technology has been used in this way. Many asylum seekers arrive in the UK without documents to prove their age, and if children are wrongly identified as adults, they can be deprived of legal protections and placed in adult-only detention facilities.
A WIRED investigation is Lighthouse Reportsin partnership with The Independent, has obtained a UK government report detailing its FAE technology tests. It shows how the system regularly offends children and adults and appears to have biased effects, affecting the largest group of migrants expected to be aged in 2025, according to Home Office research. The research raises questions about the technology’s progress and whether it should be deployed in such high-profile situations.
